In December 2008, AtmosClear signed a contract with a Chinese company to purchase Voluntary Carbon Units (VCUs) from a small-scale mini-hydro project in China. This project will displace coal-fired electricity on a local electrical grid, and will therefore reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power generation on the local grid. The project will redcue emissions by about 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per year.
The seller will begin delivery of the VCUs to AtmosClear in 2009, after the first batch of emission reductions (from 2007 and 2008) have been verified. AtmosClear will purchase VCUs from the project under a multi-year contract, mearning that it has committed to support the project for several years.
